Maximum Load limits

Before loading, you must ensure that the wagon offered to you is suitable for the freight to be carried from the point of view of maximum load weight permitted, capacity and surface; if unsuitable, you can reject it.

Wagons are not to be loaded in excess of the maximum load size and weight permitted for each wagon according to its construction specifications, the type of rail routes over which it is to be conveyed, and the speed regulations applicable to the transport mode chosen for the consignment.

Under international agreements, rail routes have been classified into various categories, according to the weight per axle and linear metre permitted:
A, B1, B2, C2, C3, C4, D2, D4. Wagons must be fitted, either on the side walls or along the deck’s sides, with code plates clearly indicating the loading gauge profile corresponding to each route category and maximum speed allowed on such route, as in the example shown below, where:

The codes shown on the left-hand side of the plate refer to the loading gauge profile applicable respectively to wagons travelling at the standard speed of 90 km/h and to those connected to trains hauled by high-speed locos (100 km/h and 120 km/h);

The symbols placed on the right-hand side next to the loading gauge information indicate that the wagons are suitable for trains with speeds of 100 and 120 km/h, respectively, with the same loading gauge profile as the standard or S systems, although the braking systems of such wagons do not fully comply with the requirements of the "S" or "SS" regime.

The FS routes are C3 coded by standard (20t x axle and 7.2 x linear metre). However, for certain rail sections, some extensions to the weight per axle and linear metre standards are applied (these are raised to 22.5 t/axle in ctg. D4), whereas on other rail sections the standard parameters are reduced or some handling restrictions apply. The loading gauge to be taken into account is the lowest permitted on each route along which the freight is to be conveyed and, generally speaking, does not allow for any tolerance.

Conditions of consignment

Volume 2 of "Conditions for wagon loading", constituting Annexe II to RIV (Regulations for the reciprocal use of wagons in international service), which is kept at the main railway stations and can be viewed by the public, indicates the “standard”categories which the Networks belonging to the RIV are able to operate, as well as any restrictions or extensions, if applicable, to the normal weight per axle and linear metre provided as standard for each of them.

The conditioning of the load must be carried out in compliance with the above-mentioned "Conditions of carriage" (Volumes 1 and 3) both to ensure that freight is shipped without undermining the safety of the operation and to minimize any likely damage to the merchandise. With regard in particular to the transport of hazardous and harmful cargo, please refer to "RID" (Regulations concerning the international transport of hazardous material) which sets out the rules for the packaging and shipping techniques of such merchandise, as well as all the special measures that need to be taken to guarantee safety of transport, and which vary according to the type of product to be carried.

Freight must be in any case insured and protected in such a way as to bear the normal risks of a journey. With regard to the latter, we would like to draw your attention to the opportunity, whenever the nature of freight allows, of effecting the shipment using the pallets’ technique which allows a more rational stockpiling of goods, a reduced chance of goods being damaged, a faster loading and unloading operation and, therefore, significant savings in transport costs. For goods on pallets, special reduced rates are also available.

Concentrated consignments

In some types of wagon, the maximum values for concentrated consignments are also indicated, and these are valid for the corresponding length, also shown on the wagons. Such values are shown below this mark for consignments distributed evenly directly on the wagon's floor or on more than two transversal supports, and under this mark for those whose weight is distributed more or less evenly over two transversal supports, as shown by the example below, referring to the case of flat bed wagons for which such values are shown on the side bars along the wagon's deck.

Terms for loading and unloading

Before departure, loading must be completed before the hub's closing time if the wagon has been provided before 12 o'clock noon, otherwise this must be done by 12 o'clock noon the next day if the wagon has been put at your disposal in the afternoon. Should the loading of the wagon not be completed within this time, varying parking fees according to the type of wagon being used will be charged.

The consignee, whom is notified of the arrival of the consignment by means of a relevant notice, is to take charge– even through another person designated for this purpose – of clearance of the merchandise which constitutes the consignment and of unloading the wagons. This operation must be carried out within 24 hours if the notice is delivered by hand or by phonogram or telegram; or within 36 hours if sent by post.
In the event of a delay in unloading the wagon, compared to the said terms, parking fees for the period exceeding such terms will be applied, starting from the moment the consignment becomes available to the consignee or delivery agency.
If the latter operation cannot take place because of a fact attributable to the consignee, the wagon is considered as being at his/her disposal with the issue of the arrival notice alone. For shipments carried out using complete trains, the FS Railway Company may grant terms that differ from those indicated above, in accordance with the agreement stipulated with the customer.

Please take care to ensure that loading and unloading are always carried out in compliance with the regulations established for this purpose by the FS Company.

It is furthermore in your interest to effect the prompt loading and unloading of the wagons, in such a way as to enable the Railway Company, through fast turnround of its rolling stock, to have the advantage of reducing the cycle of utilisation of vehicles, as well as the prompt availability of empty wagons. It is recommended that at the end of the unloading operation the wagon is always left in a good state of cleanliness.

Wheelset provision for wagons

To avoid transferring cargo at the railways stations from rail to road vehicles, and carry out the so-called door-to-door delivery service, several hubs of the Network operate a door-to-door collection and delivery service of rail freight wagons. This is implemented using specially designed road wheelsets which are capable of conveying the wagons from the railway station to the customer's warehouse, and vice versa.
