An overview of the transport market to Eastern Europe
 |
Italy's traffic towards
the countries of Eastern Europe moves 55.1 million tonnes as
a whole, with a strong imbalance between imports (37.1 million)
and exports (18 million).
- Imports have risen by an average 5% per annum over the last
few years, with more significant increases in transport to the
Balkan area.
- Exports, on the other hand, have grown at an even faster pace
(+10% a year), particularly towards Poland, Hungary and Romania.

Rail
freight transport, however, still plays a marginal role
both with regard to the influx of imports (which would
have a cargo composition more suited to transport by rail)
and exports from Italy. |
 |
The
only countries where rail commands a substantial share
of freight transportation are Poland (export flows) and
the Czech Republic (import flows). |
