An overview of the transport market to Eastern Europe

Italy's traffic towards the countries of Eastern Europe moves 75,8 million tonnes as a whole, with a strong imbalance between imports (61,2 Milioni) and exports (14,6 Milioni). (Source: Istat, 2009)

During the global crisis of the last two years, the total goods traffic to these countries slumped by 19%, but these areas still remain interesting for the delocalization of production and the supply chain of the multinational companies.

Rail freight transport, however, still plays a marginal role both with regard to the influx of imports (which would have a cargo composition more suited to transport by rail) and exports from Italy.
The only countries where rail commands a substantial share of freight transportation are Poland (export flows) and the Czech Republic (import flows).
