Pol-Rail owns
a wide range of freight wagons of various types and capacity, dedicated
to both national and international traffic. |
 |
|
|
|
 |
 |
These wagons are split into various types: covered, flat
bed, high-side, hopper and with removable covers, in order
to meet all the diverse requirements of ordinary traffic
and, above all, for carrying bulk solids (such as coal,
sands, iron ore and other products of the mining industry,
scrap metal, iron & steelwork, both finished and semi-finished
products, timber products, etc.).
In addition to ordinary wagons, some categories also include
specialist wagons, designed for carrying specific commodites:
Covered, temperature-controlled wagons for foodstuffs
such as fruit & vegetables;
Wagons with sliding side doors suitable for cargo on pallets;
Piggyback models and/or with telescopic covers for steel
coils;
With decks equipped for the transport of containers, mobile
boxes and semi-trailers;
Well/pocket wagons, featuring a "well" located between
the bogies, at a lower height than a flat bed wagon, to
accomodate loads of exceptional weight or exceeding the
maximum loading gauge permitted, etc. |

 |
 |
There are over 7,500 privately-owned freight wagons and
these are dedicated to the transport of cargo requiring
specific environmental, storage and stocking conditions.
For this reason, they tend primarily to be of a specialist
kind, such as:
Single and double-deck for the transport of motor vehicles;
Hopper wagons for cereals and for general grain products
with bottom-discharge doors and sometimes fitted with
an automatic discharge system;
Refrigerated and insulated wagons for temperature-controlled
cargo (inter-refrigerated vans);
Closed wagons of large and very large capacity, suitable
for the carriage of bulky items, even on pallets, etc.
Such wagons are marked by the code letter "P",
have a special numbering system, and carry either on the
sides or along the deck, all the information about the
name and address of the wagons' owner, in addition to
the standard details regularly shown for all Italian State
Railways' (FS) wagons.
This category of wagons includes those used by the owners
for their own purposes and those which are contracted
out to third parties. The latter are transferred on an
exclusive use basis to whomever applies in this respect
to the owner; the transfer is regulated by standard hire
contracts. |
